Awaz Trio plays the Spring Revolution Festival
Aakash Mittal's Awaz trio, master improvisers combining Indian and American music, is one of six performances curated by Pulitzer Prize winner Du Yun during Spring Revolution.  The Awaz Trio, a group that has taken the stage from Denver, Colorado to Kolkata, India, debuts Nocturne, a musical deconstruction of five Hindustani ragas.  Mittal is accompanied by Miles Okazaki (guitar), and Rajna Swaminathan (mridangam). Ticket info here.

Amir ElSaffar's Rivers of Sound
Aakash joins acclaimed composer, trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Amir ElSaffar’s Rivers of Sound as he brings together 17 musicians from a broad spectrum of traditions, ranging from Iraqi maqam to American jazz. The music incorporates elements of maqam modal music of the Middle East with jazz and other contemporary practices to create a unique microtonal environment that moves beyond the notions of style and tradition into a realm of uninhibited musical communication.

Amir ElSaffar's Rivers of Sound
Aakash joins Chicago-born trumpeter Amir ElSaffar who studied at DePaul University, soaking up Chicago’s deep jazz and blues culture before traveling extensively to explore the rich musical heritage of the Middle East. Along with his 17-piece Rivers of Sound orchestra, he weaves an intricate sonic tapestry of long-form composition and improvisation that tears down cultural boundaries.

Amir ElSaffar's Rivers of Sound
Aakash joins Amir ElSaffar's band, River of Sound.  This set showcases 17 musicians who blend eastern and western music by using resonance as their organizing principle.  As pitches and rhythms become fluid, so do cultural boundaries.

Aakash Mittal's Awaz Trio @ BRM Ragas Live Festival
The Awaz Trio sculpts sonic landscapes, pointalistic textures, and angular melodies from Indian and American improvised music. Their debut project, Nocturne, is a series of pieces that abstract and deconstruct five Hindustani evening and night ragas. The colorful dissonances, meditative silences, and punctuated rhythms that emerge paint a unique picture of the night. At times the music evokes the meditation of a world at rest, night terrors conjured by the imagination, and the slow cadence of blue light melting into darkness. The trio has performed at such notable venues as the Shastra Festival at Le Poission Rouge in New York City, Dazzle Jazz Club in Denver, Colorado, The American Center in Kolkata, India and The Walden School Concert series in Dublin, New Hampshire. In 2014 the trio conducted a residency in northern Colorado that involved workshops in public schools and state universities. The trio’s mission is to program new work that explores the liminality between Indian and American traditions. The trio is comprised of Aakash Mittal (saxophone), Rez Abbasi (guitar), and Alex Rtiz (drums).
